A walima card opens with Bismillah, names the groom's parents as hosts, invites guests to the walima of their son with the bride, then gives the day, date, time and hall, and ends with "Your presence will be our honour" and one name for replies. The walima (also written valima) is the wedding feast the groom's family gives after the nikah and rukhsati. It is a sunnah: the Prophet ﷺ told Abdur-Rahman ibn Awf, "Give a walima, even if only with one sheep" (Sahih al-Bukhari 5167). That's why the card comes from the groom's side, and why its one real job is to get people to the dinner on time.

Ask a family elder to read the Urdu before it goes out. Translators get "farzand-e-arjumand" and "baais-e-masarrat" wrong more often than not.

The short version suits couples who host their own walima, or a reception abroad where guests don't expect Urdu formalities. Write the time dinner is actually served: it is the only thing guests plan around.

Does the bride's name go on the walima card?

It's a family choice, and all three of these are common:

• Her first name: "Hamza with Ayesha". The most common today.
• Her father's name instead: "Hamza with the daughter of Mr. Khalid Rasheed". Families who prefer not to print a daughter's name use this.
• Neither: "the Walima reception of their son Hamza". Fine when everyone receiving the card already knows the bride's family.

The bride's family doesn't host the walima, but they often invite their own relatives to it, with the groom's family's blessing. Their card says whose walima it is and who is inviting:

Agree the numbers first: the groom's family is paying per head, so tell them how many guests from your side are coming.

• Barakallahu laka wa baraka alaika wa jama'a bainakuma fi khair: "May Allah bless you, send blessings upon you, and unite you both in goodness" (the Prophet's du'a for a newly married couple, Sunan Abi Dawud 2130).
• "And among His signs is that He created for you spouses from among yourselves, that you may find tranquillity in them" (Quran 30:21).
• Two families, one celebration. Join us as we give thanks.
• Your prayers made this day possible; your presence will complete it.

Mistakes that cause phone calls

• The day and date don't match. Check the calendar twice.
• A reception time two hours before the food. Give the real dinner time.
• A hall name without its area and city.
• No way to reply. One name and number, or an RSVP link, is how you get a headcount for the caterer.
